It’s one of the most picturesque villages in Sikkim, offering breathtaking views of a serene mountain hamlet nestled in North Sikkim.

Lachung is perfect for a weekend getaway, and a 2–3 night trip is usually enough to explore its charm. To travel in the Lachung and Lachen valleys, foreigners require a Restricted Area Permit, while Indian citizens need a Police Permit — both of which can be obtained from Gangtok.
There’s so much to do in Lachung! You can either soak in the peaceful vibes and scenic beauty, or get your adrenaline pumping to satisfy the adventurer in you.

Yumthang Valley is nothing short of nature’s magic. It’s a valley filled with multi-colored rhododendrons and various other flowers, painting the landscape with splendid hues. During our visit, the rhododendrons weren’t in full bloom, yet the valley still looked absolutely spectacular.
The place is secluded and offers immense serenity — a perfect spot to relax amidst a sea of flowers while enjoying peaceful solitude.
There are also several hot springs that can warm you up on freezing days. And not to forget — it’s totally Insta-worthy! Photographers will love capturing its beauty. You can even enjoy a yak ride through the valley, adding to the charm of the experience.
There are small, quirky shops around where you can pick up souvenirs for your loved ones, and the locals are truly delightful.
Yumthang is about a 1.5-hour drive from Lachung town, and you’ll need to show your permit once or twice along the way to reach the final stop. En route, we saw many yaks grazing — and it was a joy to capture them all on camera.
It took us about two hours, with multiple stops, to reach Zero Point in Lachung, Sikkim, at an elevation of 15,300 ft. For anyone visiting the area, it tops the list of must-see spots in Lachung.
On the way to Zero Point, we stopped at a café run by the army, where meals were provided at a subsidized rate. Along the route, we also saw large herds of yaks grazing across the vast grasslands.
Looking up at the sky, helicopters flew through clouds that kissed the mountain peaks. Wherever we turned our heads and wherever our eyes wandered, the view was utterly mesmerizing. We wondered just how amazing it would be at the summit!
We trekked to Zero Point, only to find ourselves standing there with our eyes and mouths wide open — yes, it was that awe-inspiring. The view of the frozen lake surrounded by massive, snow-clad Himalayas dotted with chimal trees in red, green, and yellow hues was truly breathtaking. We couldn’t stop admiring a beauty that seemed almost too good to be true!
There were several small shops and tea stalls where you could buy corn, instant noodles, chickpea salad, and more. We definitely enjoyed the vastness of the landscapes at Zero Point.
Chungthang is a small town located at the meeting point of Lachen and Lachung. It’s a very picturesque town, surrounded by lofty mountains. Historically, it is well known for a rock bearing the hand and foot prints of Padmasambhava, one of the founders of Tibetan Buddhism, who is believed to be a blessing for the area.
The locals of Chungthang told us how Padmasambhava sprinkled a handful of grains on the land, and since then, it has never been dry. The rock has a small opening from which mineral water has been continuously flowing.
Chungthang is dotted with small shops and eateries, allowing you to take a refreshing break during your trip while savoring local dishes from the Lepcha and Buddhist communities. It takes about 50 minutes to reach Chungthang Valley from Lachung.
This sanctuary is another striking place, with beautiful valleys showcasing the spectacular colors of nature. You’ll see several amazing species of rhododendron flowers blooming amidst the vast, snow-covered mountains. The sparkling river flowing near the valley adds to its beauty — I swear! We couldn’t get enough of everything we saw.
It’s best to visit the valley in the spring season, around April or May, when you’ll never want to leave this place that offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains and colorful, vast landscapes. There are some shacks selling momos and Maggi, as well as souvenir shops near the sanctuary — perfect for picking up something on your way back home.
On twin-sharing basis, a night stay in Lachung would set you back by 2500 INR.
It is one of the most beautiful properties in Lachung with utmost scenic views and close to the tourist spots. The balcony of the room offers you the morning view of clouds moving across the snow-capped mountains.
The staff of the hotel was always readily available for the service. The food at the hotel was also delicious. We had breakfast from the hotel, sitting on the balcony, gazing at the view of the serene beauty.
It is another excellent property at a nice location with cleanliness and hygiene as priority. The service was commendable. The rooms had all the facilities one would want.
The chef at the hotel made sure that our meals were as good as our view and stay. We enjoyed our time spent at the hotel. To sum it up, it was cozy and refreshing, picturesque and relaxing!
Lachung, the jewel of Sikkim is a place which is always pleasant and worth visiting throughout the year.
Winters of Lachung means heavy snowfall and a magical experience for the visitors, while summers mean pleasant weather with everything bright and fine. However, it is preferable if you visit from October to June as you get to see the best of this place with blooming beauties and sparkling nature in these months.
Definitely a yes! We traveled around in our own private vehicle, which made visiting the entire region a lot of fun. Otherwise, you’d have to rent a taxi — either shared or private — and I’d definitely recommend opting for a private trip. I’ve heard that if you choose a shared taxi, you’ll need to fit in with other passengers, which can sometimes be a bit tricky.
But it’s a cost-effective option, so if you’re comfortable with it, then perfect. These trips are usually done in a Bolero with nine other passengers.
You can get your Lachung, Sikkim trip booked through a travel agent, who will take care of everything for you, including your hotel stay.
