GULAB JI CHAI WALA IN JAIPUR: INITIAL DAYS

Gulab Ji famous chai in Jaipur is a tea stall with a character. Its ambience is homely and you’ll find the young and old sitting on stools and sipping on chai cherishing the best moments of their day. Conversations flow freely – complete strangers will strike up a friendly conversation with you like they’ve known you for ages! That’s the magic of the place – tasty tea and chatty customers.

Gulab ji is still on his feet at 94 years of age and will happily regale you with stories of how he began in 1947 with a small cart and just Rs.130. His Rajput family was not very happy when he started this line of work, as it was looked down upon. But he turned things around with his hard work to meet success! And what a success it was! Even the Royalty of Jaipur enjoyed ‘Chai ki Chuski’ from Gulabji’s hands. Now, his very same Rajput family thinks that his hot cups of tea are the coolest thing that Jaipur can boast about!

WHAT’S MORE?

It’s an admirable fact that Gulab ji Chai Wala in Jaipur has clientele that includes the high and mighty of Bollywood, but what’s even more admirable is that Gulab Ji’s cups of tea and bun maska are free for those who are penniless. It’s quite a sight outside his stall at 6 in the morning, when anywhere from 200 to 250 beggars gather around his stall for tea and 4 slices of bread… completely free of cost.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Several things! The fact that even at the ripe old age of 94, Gulab ji serves his customers and draws energy from them. The fact that people say he makes his tea completely in milk and with a special secret mix of masalas. And the fact that Gulab ji says, “his tea is nothing different, it’s just love that makes it so special“!

As per Gulabji’s experience, it was because he wasn’t afraid of struggle that he succeeded. He derived energy and enthusiasm from his customers as he worked hard to serve them. You will be able to appreciate his energy and enthusiasm firsthand when you see him still serving people at the ripe old age of 94 despite ailing health.
